NEW YORK –  The dollar is rising against most major currencies after U.S. employers added more jobs last month than economists had expected. The Labor Department says that employers added 171,000 jobs in October, and hiring was stronger in August and September than first thought. The unemployment rate edged up to 7. 9 percent from 7. 8 percent as more people started looking for jobs. The euro fell to $1. 2842 in afternoon trading from $1. 2939 late Thursday. The British pound fell to $1. 6027 from $1.6125. The dollar rose to 80. 51 Japanese yen from 80. 18 Japanese yen and to 0. 9396 Swiss franc from 0. 9321 Swiss franc. Canada also released a jobs report, saying that employees in the country added just 1,800 jobs last month. The dollar fell to 99. 38 Canadian cents from 99. 62 Canadian cents.

NEW BATAAN, Philippines Rescuers were excavating through mud and fragments Friday to recover more bodies strewn throughout a farming valley in the southern Philippines by an effective typhoon. The death toll from the storm has actually exceeded 500, with at least 400 people missing out on. More than 310,000 people have lost their homes since Typhoon Bopha struck Tuesday and are crowded inside evacuation centers or visiting their loved ones, counting on food and emergency supplies being rushed in by government agencies and help teams. "I want to know how this tragedy happened and how to prevent a repeat," President Benigno Aquino III stated throughout a see to New Bataan town, the ground absolutely no of the disaster, where ferocious winds and rainfalls lashed the area.

Key:

  • Aggregate Sentiment is meant to be an indicator of an individual's overall sentiment.
  • The Mean is meant to be an indicator of an individual's average comment sentiment.
  • The Standard Deviation, when there are enough quotes, will indicate an individual's consistency of sentiment (i.e. a Standard Deviation of 0 would mean they were very consistent in their sentiment and 1 would mean they were very inconsistent).

Note that quote stats are likely to be meaningless beyond the aggregate score due to the tiny sample size. However, they are always provided just in case you find something useful there.

RICHMOND, Va. –  The U.S. Geological Survey says the 2011 Virginia-centered earthquake shows that East Coast tremors can travel much farther and cause damage over larger areas than previously thought. The agency estimates that about one-third of the U.S. population could have felt the magnitude 5. 8 tremor. That's more than any earthquake in U.S. history. The earthquake centered about 50 miles northwest of Richmond caused more than $200 million in damage. And scientists found the quake triggered landslides at distances four times farther and over an area 20 times larger than previous research quakes has shown. The findings are being presented Tuesday at the Geological Society of America conference in Charlotte, N.C. Officials say the information will be used for risk assessments and emergency preparedness.
