Standing along a South Dakota waterside bolstered with stones, Kevin Jens peered at the placid lake and reminisced about a roadway that led to a preferred location to fish and picnic nearby however now lies underwater after being eaten up by rising waters. "There's an island under there," the mayor of Waubay said, burglarizing an uncomfortable laugh and indicating a grove of dead trees jutting from the water about a mile away. At a time when much of the Upper Midwest wrestled with the worst drought in decades, locals in this northeastern South Dakota area that sits among a chain of glacial lakes are raising roadways, draining areas, moving their houses or leaving town.

Key:

  • Aggregate Sentiment is meant to be an indicator of an individual's overall sentiment.
  • The Mean is meant to be an indicator of an individual's average comment sentiment.
  • The Standard Deviation, when there are enough quotes, will indicate an individual's consistency of sentiment (i.e. a Standard Deviation of 0 would mean they were very consistent in their sentiment and 1 would mean they were very inconsistent).

Note that quote stats are likely to be meaningless beyond the aggregate score due to the tiny sample size. However, they are always provided just in case you find something useful there.

That's the word from Mitch Goldberg, program scientist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association's Joint Polar Satellite System. Together with NASA, scientists have unveiled a new composite, cloud-free image of our planet at night. The imagery, which was posted to NASA's website on Wednesday, shows the planet bathed in cool blue, with city lights radiating out in sinewy yellow splotches. The pictures that make up the massive composite image were taken over nine days in April and 13 days in October of this year, by an instrument on a satellite that's "sensitive enough to detect the nocturnal glow produced by Earth's atmosphere and the light from a single ship in the sea," NASA states. The satellite collected 2.
