Forty years after the last Apollo spacecraft launched, the science from those missions continues to shape our view of the moon. In one of the latest developments, readings from the Apollo 14 and 15 dust detectors have been restored by scientists with the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "This is the first look at the fully calibrated, digital dust data from the Apollo 14 and 15 missions," said David Williams, a Goddard scientist and data specialist at NSSDC, NASA's permanent archive for space science mission data. The newly available data will make long-term analysis of the Apollo dust readings possible. Digital data from these two experiments were not archived before, and it's thought that roughly the last year-and-a-half of the data have never been studied.

Scientists trying to understand the evolution of impact craters on Earth and other rocky bodies have found a good case study on the moon. Researchers are focusing on Linne Crater, which lies in the moon's Mare Serenitatis region. Linne is just 1. 4 miles (2. 2 kilometers) wide, but it's extremely young — having formed just 10 million years or so ago — and beautifully preserved. Craters don't erode nearly as quickly on the moon as they do on Earth, where wind and water reshape and fill in craters at a rapid clip. But Linne is pristine even for a lunar crater, researchers said; it shows no signs of any subsequent major impacts, retaining its original shape more or less intact. And that shape is a bit of surprise. Scientists had thought simple lunar craters such as Linne should be bowl-shaped.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. –  Two astronauts are spacewalking outside the International Space Station in an attempt to find an ammonia leak in a critical radiator system. Station commander Sunita Williams and Japanese crewmate Akihiko Hoshide ventured out Thursday morning. They will isolate plumbing to help flight controllers locate the leak and open a spare radiator. Their spacewalk got under way just hours after the orbiting lab had to dodge a piece of space junk. On Wednesday evening, thrusters on a docked Russian supply ship were fired to move the space station out of harm's way. But a computer error caused the thrusters to malfunction, and the station did not reach the desired altitude. NASA says the station and its six residents are safe despite their lower-than-intended orbit. The menacing debris is a satellite fragment.
