Nov. 28, 2012: Army Pfc. Bradley Manning, center, steps out of a security vehicle as he is escorted into a courthouse in Fort Meade, Md. , for a pretrial hearing. AP FORT MEADE, Md. –  Testimony in the WikiLeaks case resumes with the second of two Marine Corps brig commanders who ordered strict pretrial confinement of an Army private charged with sending classified information to the anti-secrecy website. Chief Warrant Officer 2 Denise Barnes is the only witness scheduled Friday. It is the ninth day of Pfc. Bradley Manning's pretrial hearing at Fort Meade. He claims the nine months he spent at the base in Quantico, Va. , were so punishing that his case should be dismissed. When Barnes assumed command in January 2011, Manning had been there six months.

The Kepler project team successfully completed another science data download Nov. 22-23, 2010. This download of science data from the Kepler spacecraft marked the completion of Quarter 7, Month 2 data collection. All spacecraft commanding was accomplished without incident, as operations have been nominal for several months. As the operation concluded, the team turned its attention to prepare for the upcoming quarterly roll of the spacecraft for the winter season. This operation is planned for Dec. 21-23, 2010, and will be accompanied by another download of science data from Quarter 7, Month 3. The 2010 ground-based observing season is completed for the Kepler Mission. Next year’s ground-based observing season will begin in spring 2011. The Kepler Follow-up Observation Team is now devoting its energy to examining planetary candidates to eliminate false positives and refine the candidate list based on currently available data.

Feds Aim to Double Habitat for Spotted Owl

The last building block of the Obama administration's strategy unveiled Wednesday to keep the northern spotted owl from extinction nearly doubles the amount of Northwest national forest land dedicated to protecting the bird by the Bush administration four years ago. Still, conservation groups that went to court to force the overhaul said key gaps remain, such as an exemption for private forest lands and most state forests. The full critical habitat plan will not be published until next week, but the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced that 9 million acres of federal forests in Oregon, Washington and Northern California will come under its provisions. The amount is down from nearly 14 million acres proposed last February but still exceeds the 5. 3 million acres proposed in 2008.

An Asian elephant male named Koshik can imitate human speech, speaking words in Korean that others who know the language can understand.
